BSAVA adds new endoscopy series to Client Information Leaflets

4 February 2022

BSAVA has added seven new leaflets to its series of client information leaflets focused on veterinary procedures. They cover the following endoscopic examinations: upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, laparoscopy, laryngoscopy and tracheobronchoscopy, otoendoscopy, rhinoscopy and urethrocystoscopy.

Petsavers – Feline subclinical bacteriuria

Christina Maunder at Bristol University received BSAVA PetSavers' funding for a Master’s Degree by Research project as part of the BSAVA 60th anniversary celebrations. The Master’s student, Josh Kennils, investigated diagnostic approaches to feline subclinical bacteriuria and urinary tract infections, and the responsible use of antimicrobials.

Outbreak of Gastrointestinal Disease in Dogs

There are ongoing concerns from some veterinary practitioners and owners in several regions of the country about the potential increase in acute gastrointestinal (GI) disease, including vomiting and diarrhoea, in dogs during January. These concerns were first raised in Yorkshire.

Large retrospective study identifies common skin masses in young dogs

A study published in the latest issue of the Journal of Small Animal Practice (JSAP) found that the most common skin masses in dogs aged between 0 and 12 months were histiocytoma, papilloma, dermoid cyst, follicular cyst and mast cell tumours (MCTs).

Petsavers – Pancreatic islet microenvironment – an unexplored therapeutic target

RCVS reintroduces remote prescribing temporary measures

In light of additional pressures on practices caused by high levels of Covid-19 infection, stricter rules on isolation and the threat of the Omicron variant, the Standards Committee of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons decided to reintroduce the temporary dispensation allowing remote prescribing with immediate effect.

Study investigates safety of early postoperative hydrotherapy for dogs following thoracolumbar hemilaminectomy

A study published in the latest issue of the Journal of Small Animal Practice (JSAP) found that early hydrotherapy may be associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications following surgical treatment for thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE).

Feeder Rodent Product Recall

Salmonella has been found in supplies of some frozen feeder rodents (mice) used as food for animals therefore, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a product recall (9th December 2021).

Avian Influenza Update

The UK is now experiencing the largest ever UK outbreak of avian influenza with 40 confirmed cases (prior to this the largest number of cases was 26 cases in 2020/2021 and 13 cases in 2016/2017).
