Clinical abstract applications now open for BSAVA Congress 2018

Applications are now open for abstract presentations at BSAVA Congress 2018. Submit now and you could share your latest research, unusual case reports and novel procedures in April next year. The Clinical Abstract can be on any veterinary subject, such as announcing the preliminary results of a new study, describing interesting cases or discussing new techniques - submissions from those in general practice are especially encouraged.

BSAVA celebrates 60th anniversary in Glasgow with record delegate numbers

2-3 September saw BSAVA celebrating its diamond anniversary in the Scottish Region at the 32nd annual BSAVA Scottish Congress. A record 332 delegates enjoyed two days of first-class CPD and networking, including overseas vets from Kentucky and Texas, Estonia, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Oman and South Africa. Alongside the three streams of locally-relevant lectures, the new suturing practical sessions proved extremely popular being fully booked for all sessions.

Criticism remains for RSA’s referral network

Insurance group RSA has said that average claims for clients using its Preferred Referral Network are considerably lower after the first 18 months of operation. The company launched the network in December 2015 for underwritten pet policies at Tesco Bank, MORE TH>N, John Lewis and Argos, which sparked criticism from some referral clinics.

BSAVA launches rolling ‘stepped’ CPD programme

Vets and vet nurses can now build individual CPD programmes to match every stage of their career and expertise. For the first time, a rolling schedule of three proficiency ‘steps’ will be introduced to allow veterinary professionals to choose the most appropriate level and interest area of CPD training.

Dog breeding defects emerge as top concern for vets

Vets are calling on prospective dog owners to think twice before buying a puppy after breeding and hereditary defects came out as vets’ top animal health and welfare concern, with the number of vets citing it as a pressing issue more than doubling in the past two years, according to figures from the British Veterinary Association (BVA) revealed during Puppy Awareness Week (4-10 September).

Great results reported from joint &me mental health campaign

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Mind Matters Initiative and the Doctors’ Support Network (DSN) are pleased to report positive progress since the launch in January of their joint anti-stigma mental health campaign. The &me campaign (#AndMe), which was launched at the House of Commons in January, has taken a new approach to the de-stigmatisation of mental ill-health within the healthcare professions.
