Enhance your ECC and anaesthesia skills

14 February 2017

Vet nurses who wish to improve their emergency and critical care and anaesthesia skills can enrol on the Vet Nurse Merit Award starting this month. This award consists of 30 hours of CPD delivered in a variety of ways including online resources, one attendance day and a series of webinars. The first of 10 webinars takes place on Thursday 23rd February on ‘Triage and initial patient assessment’ and continue until Tuesday 18th July when speaker Louise O’Dwyer discusses CPR.

Bristol students benefit at BSAVA event

Following on from a successful launch event in 2016, the 2nd annual BSAVA Student Conference was held at Langford on 11-12 February, when 110 Bristol vet students were treated to the kind of BSAVA CPD they can expect to support them throughout their future career.

Avian influenza – update on biosecurity measures

9 February 2017

The government has set out the measures that will be put in place to reduce the risk of avian influenza after the current Prevention Zone expires on 28 February 2017. If the current risk assessment is not changed, for example because of further outbreaks of disease, the intention will be to adopt a more targeted approach with mandatory biosecurity measures across the country and continued housing or range netting in higher risk areas. These measures will be reviewed at the end of April.

WSAVA / FECAVA abstract submission now open

2 February 2017

You can now submit your abstract for the joint WSAVA Congress and FECAVA Eurocongress. By submitting an abstract, you will have a chance to present your research findings at the event taking place in Copenhagen this September. The deadline to submit your entry online is 1st March 2017.

Illegal import research

30 January 2017

The Scottish Government is currently funding a research project on the sourcing of pet dogs from puppy farms and illegal importation. The research team – Dr Tanya Wyatt and Mr Paul Biddle of Northumbria University, and Dr Jenny Maher of the University of South Wales – are already analysing the online market, trade data and interviewing experts about their views and experiences. In the next phase, beginning February 2017, they will be collecting data from surveys and focus groups.

Avian influenza confirmed in Boston

27 January 2017

Avian influenza (H5N8) has been confirmed at a turkey rearing farm near Boston, Lincolnshire. A 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone have been put in place around the infected premises to limit the risk of the disease spreading.

Mind Matters Initiative Research Symposium demonstrates the value of collaboration

Studies offer new hope for diagnosis of Chiari-malformation in toy dog breeds

Cat hair nicotine a biomarker for smoking-related diseases

Feline hair nicotine concentration could be used as a biomarker for tobacco smoke exposure to help future investigations into smoking-related diseases in the species. The study, by Victoria Smith and colleagues from the University of Glasgow, was funded by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association’s (BSAVA) charity PetSavers.
